Common Questions

Ocean Freight FAQ.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about ocean freight.

What is the difference between FCL and LCL ocean freight?

FCL (Full Container Load) means your cargo has an entire container to itself, ideal for large-volume shipments. LCL (Less than Container Load) means your cargo shares container space with other shippers, which lowers cost for smaller volumes at the expense of slightly longer handling time at origin and destination consolidation points.

What documents are needed for sea freight (Ocean FCL) to the USA?

A standard full-container-load ocean export requires:

  • Commercial invoice (3 copies)
  • Packing list
  • Bill of lading instructions
  • Certificate of origin (if applicable)
  • Export declaration / customs entry
  • Dangerous goods declaration (if applicable)
  • Insurance certificate
What documents are needed for Ocean LCL (less-than-container-load) shipments?

Consolidated LCL shipments require:

  • Commercial invoice & packing list
  • Booking confirmation
  • Cargo dimensions & weight verification
  • Customs brokerage authorization
  • Certificate of origin
  • Fumigation certificate (wood packaging)
